Industry research examines repair practices, technology, economics and the future of automotive plastic repair
September 25, 2026 — Plasnomic is preparing to publish a new white paper on the current state of automotive plastic repair and opportunities to expand repair-first practices in the collision industry.
Titled “Transforming Plastic Repairs: The State of Automotive Plastic Repair 2026,” the white paper is scheduled for publication in November and brings together research, technical expertise and industry insight developed through the Plasnomic Plastic Repair Alliance Council.
The project began as an initiative to establish best practices for polypropylene bumper and textured plastic repair but has expanded into a broader examination of how the collision industry approaches plastic repair from technical, operational, economic and environmental perspectives.
The council’s work has examined repairability, technician capability, training, economics, technology, repair culture, traceability, circularity and sustainability, as well as the systems needed to support greater adoption of plastic repair.
“What began as a focused initiative to establish best practices around polypropylene bumper repair and textured plastic repair has evolved into a much broader examination of how the collision industry approaches plastic repair—technically, operationally, economically and environmentally,” said Mario Dimovski, president and chair of the council.
According to Plasnomic, the white paper will examine the current state of automotive plastic repair, evidence-based repair practices, barriers to greater repair adoption and opportunities to create a more consistent, measurable and sustainable repair ecosystem.
The research and technical development phase is expected to conclude by the end of September. During October, council members and technical ambassadors will review sections of the white paper, contribute final observations and provide input based on the knowledge developed throughout the initiative.
Plasnomic will also preview its findings to selected industry leaders during SEMA 2026, Nov. 3–6, in Las Vegas. The organization has secured an executive suite with an internal boardroom for discussions with MSOs, insurers, OEM representatives, industry executives and other stakeholders.
The meetings will provide an early look at the research and an opportunity for industry leaders to discuss the findings before the broader release.
“Our priority over the coming months is to finish this work properly, capture the collective knowledge that has been developed and deliver something of genuine value to the industry,” Dimovski said.
