Axalta’s Low-Energy Paint System Wins Prestigious 2025 R&D 100 Award

Women in Collision Repair

November 24, 2025

Axalta has won a 2025 R&D 100 Award in the Mechanical/Materials category for its Spies Hecker Permasolid® Speed-TEC Fast Cure Low Energy (FCLE) Collision Repair Paint System.

The Speed-TEC FCLE system — made up of Speed Surfacer 5560 and Speed Clear Coat 8820 — is designed to significantly reduce energy usage and speed up repair workflows. According to Axalta, the system can cut energy consumption by up to 49 per cent and reduce paint-cycle times by half compared with conventional refinish systems.

The paint formulation allows for fast curing via either air-drying or a short bake cycle. Axalta says this innovation enables shops to increase throughput and lower energy costs, while still delivering durable, high-quality finish and vibrant color.

The award was presented on November 20, 2025, as part of the annual R&D 100 Awards — which have, since 1963, honoured the world’s most innovative technologies across industry, academia and research institutions.
